Wednesday Improver Level 8 - 9pm:

This month we're comparing a traditional choreography of a baladi structure with a more earthy modern baladi / sha'abi sound and using Hossam Ramszay for the former and the rather more cheeky 'El Hantour' for the latter. As the lyrics for El Hantour can be thought to have a double meaning why not check out the links below to see what different people bring to the understanding of this song?

This week we'll be using a dance element named after the famous Egyptian dancer Suheir Zaki, which is a hip drop style of move which is very pretty and a must in my humble opinion.

Here are a few links that I thought you might like to take a look at....

You'll be able to spot a number of the moves that we've been using recently in the clip above and you can see how the troupe responds too. Any group work takes a lot of repetition but Tribal takes more as it 'should' be an improvised dance and as we saw last week, even the leader can change if someone wants to hand on the role or small groups want to break off to perform or someone feels inspired to take over... so you need to get used to each leaders particular style of leading. This is a very rewarding dance as you get not only the enjoyment of the dance itself but the sense of sharing and being part of a group. See below for a solo Tribal performance with one of my favourite teachers.

Little Miss Kami Liddle is a great teacher and dancer and if you get the chance to take lessons with her when she's visiting the U.K. I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. As you can see from the clip above the group improvisation moves that you are using in class are used alongside other elements to create a highly individual dance.
